Gounder is a title used by different communities from the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka
Title Origin
The term Gounder originated from the Sangam Tamil word Kaamindan. It means noble protector of his people. It later got modified as "Kavundan" or "Gounder".
Kongu Vellalars are the dominant community in Kongu Nadu, the western Tamil Nadu. The Kongu Vellalars are Kshatriyas originally of the Chola country, who migrated in ancient times and formed the Kongu Nadu.
There are feudal classes among them such as Vellala Gounders and Naatu Gounders etc. The feudal lords are referred as Mandradiars and Pattakarars. They are prominent in the districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem, Karur, Erode, Tiruchy, Dindigul, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri
